Work on the Jean Bart began at Saint-Nazaire on December 12, 1936. At the time of the German attack in May 1940, the Captain of the Jean Bart took aIl possible steps to try and pull his vessel away from its slipway. It set sail uncompleted during the night of the 19th of June and made for Casablanca where it suffered a violent attack and rested on the bottom without incurring too much damage. Once refloated, It got back to France on August 25, 1945 where it underwent considerable repairs and rejoined the squadron in the Mediterranean.
