As World War II continued in the Pacific it was determined that the PT Boats needed to be upgraded with new more robust armaments capable of defending them against both surface and air threats. The earlier engines were replaced by three more powerful Packard 4M-2500 V12 gasoline engines enabling a top speed of 43 knots.
Upgraded armaments included the addition of an array of 20mm Mk4, 37mm T9 automatic cannon, 40mm Bofors, Mk50 5in. 8 tubes rocket launcher, and whatever the crew could get their hands on.
Due to the additional weight of such weapons, it was determined the boats needed to lose weight. This was accomplished by replacing the heavy torpedo launch tubes with the lighter roll-off type Mk 13 Torpedoes.
