USS Midway which began construction in 1943 and entered service a month after its launch in 1945 and the surrender of Japan, was the first U.S. warship to bear the name of Midway, the CV-41, to commemorate the famous naval battle that turned the tide of the Pacific War. The Midway participated in several military operations, including the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Iranian hostage crisis, and the Gulf War, and was decommissioned in 1992 and decommissioned in 1997.
