In 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy destroyer “IKAZUCHI” encountered the crew members of the British heavy cruiser “Exeter” and the British destroyer “Encounter” drifting. The captain of the 'Ikazuchi' rescued the Royal Navy officers and pulled out 422 men. In consideration of public sentiment caused by the anti-British and anti-American press, the Japanese Navy withheld this historical fact and did not treat the rescued crew as prisoners of war, but handed them over to a ship of a neutral country. After the war, this fact was revealed by the rescued Royal Navy officers.
